Patriot Act

Since September 11, 2001, one of the most significant laws affecting the lives of law-abiding Muslim Americans is the USA PATRIOT Act.  Passed within weeks after the horrific terror attacks of September 11th  and with limited debate in Congress, the law sought to expand federal law enforcement powers to thwart future terror attacks.  This law, however, went too far and fails to contain important, reasonable safeguards to protect the privacy and civil liberties of law-abiding Americans.

During the debate on reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act in 2005 and 2006, NAML joined a coalition of organizations spanning the political spectrum and calling on the President and Congress to reform the PATRIOT Act and enact provisions to protect constitutional rights.

Leveraging the knowledge and expertise of its members in the legal and political systems, NAML also partnered with Muslim American leaders and organizations to educate and empower them to participate in the debate. This experience contnues to inform our work on important issues of protecting constitutional and civil rights, work touching many of NAML’s activities.
