Interagency Meetings

NAML and its sister entity Muslim Advocates (www.muslimadvocates.org) participate in regular meetings hosted by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Civil Rights Division intended to be a forum for representatives of the Muslim, Arab and South Asian American communities to have an opportunity to share concerns about the conduct and policies of federal law enforcement and immigration officials. In addition to DOJ officials, several other federal agencies participate in these meetings, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the U.S. Department of State.

NAML and Muslim Advocates typically raise a variety of immigration and civil rights issues of interest to Muslim Americans. Issues that have been previously raised included:

»the delay faced by Muslim males seeking citizenship in receiving security clearances from the federal government in order to proceed with their citizenship approval process

»the radiation monitoring of Muslim homes and businesses by the FBI and U.S. Department of Energy in major metropolitan areas

»the process for DHS deciding that an individual will be denied entry to the U.S. at a border or airport because the individual poses a “national security risk”
